This past Thursday night, we celebrated our fourth birthday - and it was quite the fete! We were feelin' the love and were so happy to see so many of our loyal Fly Fans. New styles arrived just in time for the event, and our girls picked out some great looks in between nibbling on cupcakes from Lulu's Sweet Shoppe, sipping champagne from The Wine Bottega, and getting psychic insight from our visiting clairvoyants.

We're jumping on the blogger bandwagon for sharing our "Friday Faves!" It makes for a great platform to share a peek of some new arrivals, and this week, in keeping with our philosophy, I've got a splendid mix of modern & vintage for y'all to see...

First up, this great overall representation, which can be seen in our current window display. The look on the left pairs the Pretty Petunia Cardigan, by Fly newcomer Knitted Dove, with a bright vintage stripe dress and LouLou Bijoux flower necklace. We love the feminine, yet unique, looks from Knitted Dove, as well as their mantra of being "created with PEACE in mind." The companion mannequin is wearing the Knitted Dove Craft Circle Dress with a layered vintage chain necklace. Completing the display are a couple of light vintage summer clutches and two summer shoe styles by Angie - funky, studded gladiators and wedges!

While April was filled with rain in Boston, The Fly had a few shining moments, especially when it comes to our vintage sales. Finding a perfect fit can be difficult enough when dealing with current labels/styles, and the process often becomes even more tricky when it comes to trying on vintage pieces; what with the trends in sizing changing over time, and some pieces having been altered for a previous owner, and all. This means that when girl meets garment and discovers a piece that fits like a glove, it results in what we have come to call our "Cinderella Moments," and over the last few weeks we've have seen quite a few!

Quite possibly the ULTIMATE Cinderella Moment of the season... Our devoted Fly fan, Jodi, came to see us from DC and walked away with this coveted Vintage Cocktail Dress!!!

Spring Renewal!

Last night we ushered in Spring with our first ever 'Spring Renewal' Event. It was a great chance to get everyone excited for the new season. We were all thrilled to have Sara Phelps, from North End Yoga, in house to give mini-massages to help loosen everyone up in between trying on new spring looks to freshen their wardrobes. Also in store was Zhenique Israelian, of Bellula Jewels, who brought her latest collections for a dazzling trunk show. And, as always, libations were on hand, courtesy of our friends at The Wine Bottega. Many thanks to Sara, Zhenique, and Kerry for helping us put together a successful event. Just as seeing the first buds on the trees brings a smile to our faces, so does the arrival of seasonal transition styles, and we can’t wait for you to see the latest! While pops of color are starting to spring up (pun intended), our most recent shipments featured a lot of black and tan. Don’t worry, you’ll be hearing and seeing more from me over the next few weeks/months about fantastic colors for Spring & Summer – but right now, all this black & tan really has us amped up for a St. Patty’s Day Guinness! Irish Eyes Are Smiling

Last night we kicked off March with a nod to the Irish! With Spring on the horizon and St. Patty's day only a few weeks away, we welcomed all things green and bright.

In addition to a TON of new SPRING VINTAGE, we kicked off our new EARRING OF THE MONTH CLUB with some fab green & gold dazzlers (pictured below). January seems to be Ladies Month around here… and we’re really celebrating! Lorrinda and I both had our birthdays last week, giving each of us a chance for girls’ nights out on which to don some statement pieces and cut-loose. Happy 2011 to all! We're really looking forward to another fabulous year, and we're pleased to kick off the new year with a new addition to our team! For those of you who may have been viewing our product photos on Facebook and wondered 'Who's that girl rockin' the velvet jumper with sparkly tights?' - meet Erin! With her love of both fashion and Italian culture, Erin seems like a great fit for our boutique in the heart of Little Italy. So, without further ado, here she is, in her own words:

Ciao!

Hello, hello, everyone! My name is Erin and I am SO EXCITED to introduce myself as the newest member of The Velvet Fly team! I wanted to officially say hello and “scribble” a few lines about myself for all who are curious and interested!

I graduated from Boston University this past May with a degree in communications/public relations and a concentration in Italian. I then spent the summer abroad in Italy pursuing one of my biggest passions: the Italian language/culture (hence my use of Ciao… I’m seriously obsessed with all things Italian). Upon my return to the states, I moved back to my favorite U.S. city- Boston - and picked up a plethora of jobs. The majority of my jobs are retail-related, because I’m also clothing obsessed; thus the need for SEVERAL of them. I nearly cried the first time I walked into The Velvet Fly and saw that they carried Lia Molly :)

Anyways, enough about me! I’d really just love to meet all of you, as we share a common love: The Velvet Fly! I’ll be at the store mostly on Wednesdays and Saturdays, so, please stop by to say hello and check out our ever-changing and always fabulous merchandise!

A Grand-Slam Double-Header!

Last night's event was a great success! The Latico Sample Sale - Olaria Studio Trunk Show double-feature drew in a lively crown and we were thrilled to see so many FLY girls in attendance. The fabulous selections from both of our featured brands, coupled with other new store arrivals, were hard to resist. As were the "dangerously delicious" treats from our friends at Mercato del Mare - HUGE thanks to Liz & Keri! And, no Fly event would be complete without libations courtesy of our friends at The Wine Bottega! Overall, a fun night of pre-holiday shopping :)

NEWvember is Here!

Rabbit, rabbit! Can you believe November has arrived? Mother Nature certainly wanted to make sure we know it here in Boston; the extremely chilly temps that are now upon us make it hard to overlook! Thankfully, we just received a bunch of great late Fall styles to help you stay stylish and keep warm.

For starters, we’ve got the latest from Tulle. We’ve always loved Tulle for their smart construction and awesome price points! Check out these new pieces:

This vivid plum coat and graphic print skirt are featured in our current window display.

Personally, I had a tricky time deciding which of these next two coats would become mine. In the end the navy won for its shape and belting, but the black & white was a very close second!

And how can you not LOVE this delish faux fur jacket?!

Other new arrivals this past week include New Orleans-based Lia Molly. These knits are always Fly faves. Its hard to say no to the unique color combinations, patterns, and quirky details (the change purse pockets are one of their signatures)! I chose to don the first (black with grey and orange/coral) yesterday in honor of Halloween and want to take the second (brown with cream and gold) home for Thanksgiving. I can’t get enough of them!

Also, the wait is over – the first of Amy Rose’s Vintage Fuss hairclips are in store now! Here’s a glimpse:

Fall in Love with Snazzy Comfort!

Forever yearning for pieces that look cool, put-together, and effortlessly chic AND comfortable, we are thrilled with the latest arrivals from Aryn K and Loveappella!

First, let's take a peek at some truly unique pieces from Aryn K... First, a blazer that can go just about anywhere and make a statement - without being too over the top, and while still providing a level of comfort I dare you to find from any other traditional blazer. The gold chain detail is soooo sharp; hello pizazz!

Success for a Cause!

Last Friday's Cocktails for a Cause (10% For 10%) was a great success! First off, a HUGE shout-out to our friends at LuLu's Sweet Shoppe for providing yummy cupcakes, complete with pink ribbons!

And, of course, many thanks to all you FLY girls who came out for a fun night to help support the fight against breast cancer. It meant a lot to us and to our FLY Fave who will be one of hundreds doing the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer! How fortuitous that I chose this week's mani-pedi to return to one of my absolute favorite fall nail colors, Metro Chic (from Sephora by OPI)?!?

This fabulous smoky grey polish, with a hint of brownish-purple, is right on point with the color palette seen in the newest arrivals here at the Fly! Many shades of pewter, charcoal, and taupe popped up recently, along side chocolate brown and cream - combos that scream fall and cozy (not to mention being great neutrals to pair with almost any color under the sun)!

First up, new styles from Angie :) These three sweater dresses are perfect for this fall weather! They're great paired with leggings or skinny jeans and topped with warm-toned accessories and jewelry. We love Angie's ability to evoke your boho side at reasonable prices, and these pieces are no exception...

Next, this sweater from New Orleans based, Lia Molly. It is unique, flattering, and comfy, to boot! This is a great use of the featured color palette, too; it is a bit of a statement print without coming off as 'too much. What's All the Fuss About?

Does fall ever make you feel nostalgic? I know I often start reminiscing when the autumnal weather sets in; thinking about everything from jumping in piles of leaves as a kid, to layering up for crisp days, to Halloween costumes, and many things in between. Of course, at the same time, I always feel like fall is a chance for a fresh start - thanks to years of first days of school, the Jewish New Year, not to mention always picking up magazines featuring comprehensive fall fashion run-downs! So, it is quite serendipitous that we just received fall vintage pieces AND a TON of new jewelry from Fly Fave, Vintage Fuss.

No one does it like Vintage Fuss's Amy Rose! Her use of unexpected combinations of old and new materials (think vintage beads, lockets, cabochons, etc.) make her repurposed jewelry totally one-of-a-kind. As evidenced by our most recent acquisitions, Amy continues to top herself. Check out some of her newest necklaces...

Here we go folks… this week marks my favorite day of the year: the official start of Autumn! So, what better day than today to feature some great ideas for the crisp weather that is beginning to descend upon New England?!? The time has come to really start thinking about layering, and we’ve got some pieces that are chic, easy, and comfortable.

To ease into cooler days and nights, I’m loving these new wraps from Top It Off. Not only are the super soft, they come in great neutral colors and can be worn three ways (wrap, asymmetrical poncho, and scarf). Some have feminine ruffles, others are more simple, and can be paired with a fun necklace, much like the new flower piece by Bohm, seen below.

Having trouble admitting that coat season is creeping up on us? Don’t worry, these two jackets from Hazel are so cool and on trend that you’ll want to wear them every day! Float like a Butterfly, Sting like a… Tee?

Technically, there are still almost two more weeks until it is officially fall, but, as I’ve mentioned before, the Fly is filling up fast with autumnal styles. And, with this week being back-to-school time, as well as Rosh Hashanah (the start of the Jewish New Year), it seems like there is no better time to really buckle down (pun intended) and get your fall fashion ready! Now, I know some of you are having trouble switching gears and thinking about dressing for cooler temps, but, I promise, our fall collections will definitely keep your spirits up… Today I had to stifle squeals of glee when I received shipments from two Fly favorites: Desigual and Papillon Eastern! Following suit with our previous fall arrivals, these latest pieces have funk and comfort factors that are both off the charts.

Papillon Eastern fits in just right here at the Fly; the label’s aesthetic is feminine but also unique and easy-to-wear, and their logo is a butterfly, to boot! And there are more butterflies featured on this awesome new sweater dress/tunic (paired here with an Olaria medallion). Could this be more up our modern-vintage alley?

And, of course, I can’t say enough good things about our Spanish friends, Desigual. The styles I received this morning, true to form, are fantastic. I just love that Desigual, and many of our other adored brands, are helping us ease gracefully into the next season! They’ve taken the aspects we’ve come to know and covet (vibrant prints and patchworks) and made comfortable pieces that will be great for layering without making you feel bulked up and dark, as some fall pieces tend to. Summer Send-Off and Fall Transitions...

Hi all! I’ve returned from my brief hiatus (read: the pinnacle of wedding season and post-nuptial recovery phase) just in time to recap the close of summer and introduce the transition to fall. So, let’s get down to business…

Our final event of Summer 2010 was the brainchild of our faaaaaaabbbbulous summer intern, Marla. All summer, our fave Arkansan was a HUGE help and true delight to have by our sides, and we were more than bummed to see her go. Alas, her final fall semester was calling. It only seems fitting then, that our Summer Night of Cocktails & Sales served as a good-bye party – to both Marla and to summer styles. What better way to celebrate than with what is arguably the most warm, bright, and cheery flower; the sunflower?!? 28 Parmenter was chock-full of the jolly bloom, and the warmth was practically contagious (literally and figuratively) that night. No flower can lift spirits quite like sunflowers can, and the same can be said for both Marla and for the arrival of new fall fashions! So, with the welcoming of the seasonal shift and the styles that come with it (not to mention the unveiling of our new signature cocktail, the Velvetini), we had to bid adieu to Miss Marla. She will be missed terribly and we wish her all the best as she finishes her college career!

In preparation for autumnal times, the store has been filling up with lots of great transitional pieces. And, just like the sunflowers at the event, these styles are bold, yet comfortable; coats, tunics and tops in fun colors/prints and made of cozy fabrics!

We’re approaching one of the most bittersweet times of the year… the transition to fall. While we’re crushed to see the end of summer fast approaching (and scrambling to cross off items from our Summer 2010 bucket lists), we are thankful to have new fall arrivals to build our spirits back up. Fall fashion arrivals are always exciting, and this past week we received a shipment from one label whose pieces always put a smile on our faces – Desigual is back at the Fly! How appropriate, then, that their current collection is named “Happy?!” We are thrilled to have the colorful and quirky Spanish designs back in store to help ease the seasonal transition. Desigual pieces are a great match for many a Fly girl, thanks to the founder’s vision to “create clothing that arouses positive emotions, commitment, tolerance, constant improvement, innovation and fun. His success is worn all over the globe, appealing to the majority yet nurturing the individual.”

It seems fitting now to share a brief, yet relative, anecdote. I just had a customer come in and tell me that she had just seen Eat, Pray, Love and was now yearning for color in her wardrobe to mimic the vibrancy of the scenery featured in the movie. Not to mention the desire for redefining her style as part of the quest for her own self-discovery, much like Julia Roberts’ character. Enter Desigual! As soon as she laid eyes on the new pieces, I could see the delight all over her face. Perhaps these patterns from an overseas designer will be the answer to her feared fashion rut.

National acclaim doesn't come in a much better form than being featured in the NY Times, and this past weekend we were lucky enough to receive a nod...

Yesterday's NY Times Travel section included a piece on "36 Hours in Boston," suggesting how to spend a weekend in our lovely city. The Saturday afternoon itinerary featured North End hot-spots, telling readers that "Boston’s Little Italy has become more Milan than manicotti, with boutiques popping up between restaurants and pastry shops." Our store is mentioned in the 3PM 'Couture and Cannolis' time slot, siting our "[melding of] vintage and modern."

Well, ladies, I am SO psyched for you all to see our latest styles from the much beloved Hype. We’ve had two of these dresses in the store for a couple of weeks and customers have been raving about them. And I don’t blame them, they possess the trifecta we’ve come to love and expect from fabulous labels like Hype: complimentary color palette, fun print, and flattering fit! Not to mention their ability to go cross-seasonal (and many of you know how much I ADORE a dress’s ability to make gracious weather transitions with the addition of thick tights, a cardigan, a shoe swap and perhaps a belt). So, naturally, I could not wait to open today’s shipment from Hype. My reaction upon unveiling the newest goodies could probably be likened to that of Homer Simpson when he is handed a cold beer – total elation and practically drooling… They’ve done it again! Two more stellar dresses that I’m sure you’ll love :)

A Sensational Summer at the Fly!

My name is Marla Swindler, and I am THRILLED to be the newest addition to the Fly team! I was born and raised in Little Rock, AR, and my love for clothing and design led me to the apparel studies program at The University of Arkansas from where I will graduate this December. I love painting, sewing, traveling (most recently to Italy!), and like every other 21-year-old fashion-loving woman, I have spent many years discovering myself and developing my own sense of style and flare. Throughout this ongoing process, I generated a strong passion for anything and everything vintage! From furniture to kitchenware to clothing, I love finding one-of-a-kind items that set me apart from other fashionistas.

On another note…

About 3 years ago, my two older sisters and I flew up to the beautiful city of Boston to visit family—and I fell in love. We engaged in all the typical tourist activities (duck boat tour, the fabulous walk down Newbury Street, Quincy Market), and upon leaving, I always imagined living a life Boston style.

Last October, I was flipping through the pages of my new Lucky Magazine and stumbled upon a segment featuring Boston shopping in the North End. The fabulous photo and “half-vintage, half-contemporary” merchandise description were all I needed to be sold on visiting this store. And then I wondered…was there any way I could complete my apparel studies internship at The Velvet Fly?? It would be perfect—I’d be at a store right up my fashion ally, and I’d be in a city I had dreamed of revisiting. An email, phone call, and flight away I was talking with Beth and Lorrinda about the possibility of being their intern…and HERE I AM!!

I am now the lucky girl working with Beth, Lorrinda, and Naomi at the Velvet Fly. Whether you are an avid Fly shopper or have never visited, please come to 28 Parmenter Street and see what this fabulous shop has to offer…and introduce yourself—I love meeting new people!

The weather was gorgeous, the mimosas were flowing and the muffins were scrumptious (many thanks to our friends and neighbors at Boston Common Coffee Co.)! Well, folks, a few great pieces of news to share today:

1) In case you’ve been living under a rock, the Celtics beat the Lakers in Game 2 last night! Who’s excited for Tuesday’s and Thursday’s games?!? BEAT L.A. (again)!

2) We had a victory of our own here at the store… we have conquered the heat! Adjusting to the heating and cooling needs of our new space proved to be a bit of a challenge, but we seem to have found some decent solutions. So, fret not, you can all come shop and visit in a comfortable environment J

3) More summer arrivals are pouring in (which reminds me, hopefully the rain is done pouring for awhile!) and we could not be more excited about them…

LOST? Guidance and Inspiration Await You…

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am still reeling from last night’s series finale of LOST! Some fans were completely satisfied with the closing of this epic series, while others are left with questions and confusion. Despite anyone’s feelings about how the show’s ending, at least one message sings loud and true: there comes a time when we must all simply let go, pay tribute to the people and places we love, embrace life’s little surprises, and appreciate the beauty around us. And let’s be honest, that island was pretty darn gorgeous when you look past the polar bear, smoke monster, and endless mysteries…

So, why not turn our attention from “the island” to the idea of a fun island-inspired summer wardrobe?!

I know, I know, it sounds like a petty or materialistic jump. However, I’ve been thinking recently about the ease of dress that comes with pretty much any island lifestyle as well getting very excited to don some summer colors straight from the palette created by nature on a tropical island, so somehow this seems like the right time to discuss summer wardrobe inspirations.

My visions of bright, fresh and easy looks expanded even more after talking with one of our loyal Fly Girls, Andrea. Always striving for the fun and unique, Andrea told me that each summer she picks a theme for her wardrobe; last year was “Mermaid” and this year is “Miami” (the runner-up was “1930s”). I couldn’t agree more with her that summer is a great time to really have fun and create a new signature look! And what better way to pay tribute to someone or some place than developing a style in their honor? Sounds like fun to me! Just pick an appropriate color palette, fabric, and/or texture and thread it throughout your summer pieces and I promise you’ll quickly be able to evoke your inspired theme.

So, Andrea’s theme is “Miami,” mine is looking like it will be "Island," and others have said theirs will be everything from “English garden” or “Leather & Lace” to “Southwest,” “80s” or “Butterfly.” What will yours be? What person, place, era or object will you weave into your summer look? "Deep (and Fun) Thoughts"

Well, you can ask us, however you'd like, and we'll share our newest arrivals with you! In addition to jewelry and handbags from some of everyone's favorite designers, we're psyched to show you what just popped up on our racks...

First up, and the root of this weeks' Musings title, four styles from newcomer to the Fly, By Deep Los Angeles. I was totally stoked to see these pieces when they arrived a few days ago. Each one combines the comfort of a jersey fabric with the pizazz of great embellishments like beading, sequins, and chains (I've included detail shots below). And, at such a great price point (all are under $65), how can you say no to a fun and easy addition to your 'going out' wardrobe?!? I know I can't!

Next, if your inner hippie is calling and you want to expand your bohemian repertoire, you must check out the latest from Angie. These prints and styles are a great hybrid of boho and girly with a bit of an edge - right up our alley (and hopefully yours too). I love them! Again, most of these are under $65; perfect for the girl with lots of events and a strict budget. Whether you've got a rehearsal dinner, a shower, an afternoon luncheon, or just want to add some funk to your weekend wears, come try them soon... the last round of Angie styles flew out the door!

FLY at any age!

Welcome to the first dose of Monday Musings from the Fly! Now that we're settling into our new digs and reopened for Mondays, the goal is to kick off each with an anecdote or update to relieve any case of the "Mondays" that might be out there and to keep everyone's creative fashion juices flowing... This week I've got a lil story that I hope will warm your hearts despite the chilly temps that have descended on Boston. Enjoy!

Last week, one of our new neighbors came in to check us out and I immediately thought to myself, “What a FLY elderly lady?!”

She was dressed in a chic ensemble that was absolutely on point – a layered look in a neutral color palette of ecru and cream that was both age and weather appropriate. She oozed sophisticated in her perfectly tailored blazer, adorned with a great rhinestone broach (and you know how much we love broaches around here - see examlpes below), and subtly textured gauchos.

I quickly introduced myself, feeling that this was a special woman. Francesca, now 90 years old, I learned, was born and raised right here in the North End and was full of great stories. When she spotted one of our fave vintage clutches, a gold mesh fold-over (see below), she started telling me the history behind some of the treasures she has in her own personal collection.

Since her teenage years, in the late 1930s, Francesca’s mother always told her “If you’ve got a piece of clothing that cannot be repaired, you may as well make it a rag, but if there’s nothing wrong with it, you KEEP it!” Preach it, mama! Francesca took the message to heart and the rule of thumb stuck with her…

The pieces Francesca has kept for years include the handbag she brought on her honeymoon, the mink stole she wore to the theater, and sequined & bejeweled tops that made her a standout at cocktail parties (one of which she recently broke out for her birthday party!). As she described the details of her own - now vintage - items, I found myself wishing I could raid her closet!

Her sage advice is right on the money; she spoke of integrating treasured, fabulous pieces into a signature style that evolves over time and helps you age gracefully. Remember her gauchos? Those were originally long trousers that, after a few years, she decided just weren’t right for her and “They just HAD to be altered… Now they fit my lifestyle the way they should and I wear them all the time.” Francesca proves that women can be FLY at any age! We should all aspire to follow Francesca words of wisdom!

Lorrinda and I started packing up the store yesterday and realized we have a lot to move!!!! So to minimize the amount we decided to have an impromptu SALE. Come in anytime this last weekend at 424 Hanover St.and received 10% off your entire purchase!

A special thanks to all our FLY GIRLS that showed up just before the down pour to sip mimosas with us! The event was a really good time! We just love all of our regular fly girls!
